one month and an idea

Yesterday I had another awful flare up of my IBS. It was so bad I couldn't make it in to work. This has happened at least once per month since moving to Savannah and twice in the last two weeks. To say I'm concerned is a bit of an understatement.

However, today while I was in line at subway getting lunch I came to a bit of a realization. My "usual" is the black forest ham sandwich on 9 grain honey oat bread. It is incredibly delicious but the ham could be the cause of the increase in flare ups... or at least the ones this month. Ever since I was first diagnosed with IBS red meat has been a huge trigger food for me... which is sad since I like it and my family has an entire holiday celebrating it (seriously, it's called steak saturday and involves a trophy called the golden fork). I can eat it and be fine but only every now and then and only in small amounts.

Now, most people wouldn't count ham as red meat since it's pork but in the last month I've been eating more ham than usual (thanks to my increased amount of lunches at subway and sunday dinners at the in-laws) and tada! More issues! So, I am going to add ham to my list of foods to watch out for and see if that helps.

Finally..... it is officially one month until my 5K! Woohoo!

  1. I know how you feel! I have IBS and red meat has a tendancy to cause attacks with me as well... but we raise cattle so it is pretty hard to stay away from lol

    good luck!

  2. IBS :( no fun. The ham doesn't shock me -- really high in sodium -- that can flare things up. Subway in general is REALLY high in sodium -- it's right up there with soup. :( Hope you feel better!
